Natural Fiber Activewear FAQ: Your Questions Answered

Natural Fiber Activewear FAQ: Your Questions Answered

Everything You've Ever Wanted to Know About Natural Fiber Activewear

Switching to natural fiber activewear raises a lot of questions about performance, care, sizing, sustainability, and more. We've compiled the most common questions we hear from women across the UAE and GCC, with honest, detailed answers.

About Natural Fibers

What are natural fiber activewear fabrics?

Natural fiber activewear is made from plant-based or naturally derived materials rather than petroleum-based synthetics. The most common options are Tencel (lyocell), bamboo, and organic cotton. Each has unique properties that make it well-suited to different types of exercise and different climates.

Is natural fiber activewear as good as synthetic for working out?

For most workouts, yes, and often better. Tencel and bamboo are highly moisture-wicking, breathable, and odor-resistant, outperforming polyester in comfort and skin feel. For very high-impact activities like marathon running, some women prefer a blend that includes a small amount of natural stretch fiber. But for yoga, Pilates, gym training, and most everyday workouts, natural fiber activewear performs excellently.

What is Tencel and where does it come from?

Tencel is the brand name for lyocell fiber, made from sustainably sourced wood pulp (primarily eucalyptus) by the Austrian company Lenzing AG. It's produced in a closed-loop process that recycles 99% of the water and solvents used, making it one of the most environmentally responsible fabrics available. The result is a silky, breathable, moisture-wicking fabric that feels luxurious against the skin.

What's the difference between organic cotton and regular cotton?

Organic cotton is grown without synthetic pesticides, herbicides, or genetically modified seeds, and is certified by standards like GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) or OEKO-TEX. Regular cotton is one of the world's most chemically intensive crops, using large amounts of pesticides that can remain in the finished fabric. Organic cotton is safer for your skin, better for farmers, and less damaging to the environment.

Performance & Comfort

Will natural fiber activewear keep me cool in the UAE heat?

Yes, this is actually one of natural fiber activewear's greatest strengths in the UAE. Tencel and bamboo are both highly breathable and moisture-wicking, allowing air to circulate and sweat to evaporate efficiently. Unlike synthetic fabrics that trap heat against your skin, natural fibers help your body regulate temperature, keeping you cooler during outdoor exercise and more comfortable in air-conditioned gyms.

Does natural fiber activewear stretch enough for yoga and exercise?

Yes. High-quality natural fiber activewear is designed with four-way stretch, allowing full range of motion for yoga, Pilates, and gym training. Tencel and bamboo fabrics have excellent natural drape and recovery, meaning they move with your body and return to their shape after stretching.

Does natural fiber activewear smell after a workout?

Natural fibers are naturally antibacterial, which means they resist odour-causing bacteria far better than polyester. Many women find that their bamboo or Tencel activewear stays fresher for longer between washes compared to synthetic alternatives.

Sizing & Fit

How do I find my size in natural fiber activewear?

Natural fiber activewear sizing is generally consistent with standard clothing sizes. We recommend measuring your waist, hips, and inseam and comparing to the size guide on each product page. If you're between sizes, consider your preferred fit size up for a more relaxed feel, or stay true to size for a closer fit.

Will natural fiber activewear shrink?

Tencel and bamboo have minimal shrinkage when cared for correctly  washed in cold water and air dried. Organic cotton can shrink slightly if washed in hot water or tumble dried. Always follow the care label instructions to maintain the fit and shape of your pieces.

Does natural fiber activewear stretch out over time?

High-quality natural fiber activewear is designed to maintain its shape with proper care. Avoid tumble drying, which can break down fibers and cause stretching. Air drying flat or on a hanger preserves the shape of your pieces.

Care & Washing

How do I wash natural fiber activewear?

The general guidelines for all natural fiber activewear:

  • Machine wash cold on a gentle cycle, or hand wash
  • Use a mild, pH-neutral detergent
  • Avoid bleach and fabric softeners
  • Turn garments inside out before washing
  • Air dry flat or on a hanger, avoid tumble drying
  • Iron on low heat if needed

Can I put natural fiber activewear in the dryer?

We recommend avoiding the tumble dryer for natural fiber activewear. High heat can shrink fibers, damage elastic, and reduce the lifespan of your pieces. Air drying is quick in the UAE's climate and preserves your activewear much better.

How often should I wash my natural fiber activewear?

Because natural fibers are naturally antibacterial and odour-resistant, you may find you can wear them more than once between washes for lower-intensity activities. For high-intensity workouts, wash after each wear. Washing less frequently extends the life of your pieces and reduces water usage.

Can I use fabric softener on natural fiber activewear?

Avoid fabric softener. It coats natural fibers with a waxy residue that reduces breathability and moisture-wicking properties. Natural fibers are already soft; they don't need softener.

Sustainability

Why is natural fiber activewear better for the environment?

Synthetic activewear releases microplastic fibers with every wash, contributing to ocean pollution. Natural fibers are biodegradable and don't shed microplastics. Additionally, natural fiber production uses significantly less water and energy than synthetic fabric production, and doesn't rely on petroleum as a raw material.

What certifications should I look for?

  • OEKO-TEX Standard 100: Certifies that the fabric is free from harmful chemicals
  • GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard): Certifies organic fiber content and responsible processing
  • FSC (Forest Stewardship Council): Certifies sustainably sourced wood pulp for Tencel
  • Lenzing ECOVERO / Tencel™ branded fiber: Confirms genuine Tencel fiber from Lenzing
